FHA announced a broad Handbook Waiver of Individual Water Well Distance Requirements for Existing Construction on July 27, 2026. The waiver is listed by HUD as an active Single Family Housing waiver.

What did not disappear?

A waiver of specified distance requirements does not mean water quality, local health requirements, system functionality or other FHA property standards disappeared. The lender/appraiser still applies the current requirements that remain in force.

Website maintenance flag: because this is an active waiver rather than simply timeless Handbook language, this page should be rechecked when HUD modifies, expires or incorporates the waiver into later Handbook policy.
