USDA Assets & Reserves
USDA evaluates verified assets for funds to close and, when used, post-closing reserves.
Reserves mean funds left after closing
Chapter 9 defines GUS cash reserves as liquid assets remaining available to the borrower after closing.
Do not overstate reserves
USDA specifically warns lenders not to overstate assets used as reserves. Funds entered into GUS as reserves must actually remain available post-closing.
Cash on hand has limited treatment
Current Chapter 9 allows documented cash on hand as an eligible funds-to-close source in qualifying circumstances, but lists it as ineligible for reserves.
Business accounts
USDA provides a documentation path for business-account funds, including recent statements or verification of deposit, subject to current rules.
