USDA Credit & GUS
USDA Guaranteed loans are underwritten by approved lenders, with GUS helping evaluate eligibility and risk.
USDA does not make the Guaranteed loan
USDA states that approved lenders originate and underwrite Guaranteed loans; USDA provides the loan note guarantee.
GUS
The Guaranteed Underwriting System evaluates loan data and returns underwriting findings. USDA also provides current GUS training and manual-submission guidance for lenders.
Credit still matters
The lender must determine that the applicant has an acceptable credit history under current USDA, GUS and lender requirements. Avoid treating one lender's score overlay as a universal USDA rule without checking current program guidance.
USDA rule, GUS result, or lender overlay?
If a lender says this cannot be done, identify the exact layer before treating the answer as universal. Use the USDA decline framework →
