USDA Debts & Student Loans
USDA total-debt analysis starts with documented obligations, not just what happens to appear on one credit report.
Open obligations must be captured
Current Chapter 11 requires lenders to consider open debts and accounts incurred through closing and document them in GUS and the loan application as applicable.
Installment debt
Installment obligations are generally included. Current Chapter 11 allows certain debts with ten or fewer payments remaining to be omitted when the payment does not exceed 5% of monthly repayment income.
Student loans
Student loans have USDA-specific payment treatment. Use the current Chapter 11 rule and documented repayment status rather than copying FHA, VA or conventional student-loan math.
USDA rule, GUS result, or lender overlay?
If a lender says this cannot be done, identify the exact layer before treating the answer as universal. Use the USDA decline framework →
